About

Strategy, Funding, and Growth for Purpose-Driven Organizations

Mayapple Consulting is an independent consulting practice led by Carol Newark, Ph.D.

I work directly with nonprofit organizations to strengthen programs, secure and manage funding, and make strategic decisions about growth and sustainability.

My work is grounded in both research and practice. I have spent over 10 years working in harm reduction, including frontline service delivery, nonprofit leadership, grant management, community advocacy, litigation support, research, and statewide strategy.

I believe good consulting should be practical. The best strategy is the one that takes into account the organization’s capacity, the political and legal landscape, and funding available to make the work possible. Together, we’ll find an approach that works for your organization.

Why Mayapple?

A Ph.D. doesn’t replace practical experience. It strengthens it.

In 2023, I graduated from UC Irvine with a Ph.D. in Criminology, Law and Society. My dissertation research examined how grant funding impacts nonprofits, for better or worse, and how the harm reduction movement in California works together to resist the negative impacts of the nonprofit industrial complex. That research continues to shape how I approach my consulting work. I find it incredibly fulfilling to handle the reporting, documentation, and compliance work that allows clients to spend more time on their work with participants. The work that truly matters.

Over a decade in Harm Reduction

Since 2015, I’ve worked in harm reduction programs as a volunteer, outreach worker, operations director, board member, executive director, advocate, and consultant. I’ve managed programs, trained staff and volunteers, managed grants and data, worked with the community members and elected officials, and helped organizations navigate political and legal challenges.

That experience shapes how I consult. My recommendations are grounded not only in strategy, but also in an understanding of what it actually takes to implement it inside a nonprofit.

Let’s talk.

Whether you are working toward a grant deadline, planning a program expansion, navigating an organizational challenge, or looking to build harm reduction capacity in your region, I’d be glad to hear about it.
